Do you already have a tax number?
Most employed South Africans are automatically registered for tax by their employer, so you probably already have a tax number even if you have never filed. You can find it on your IRP5 payslip certificate, or request it on the SARS website or the SARS MobiApp. You do not need to register for a tax number again, only for eFiling.
What you need before you start
- Your South African ID number.
- Your tax reference number (if you have one).
- Your banking details.
- A working email address and cellphone number for OTP verification.
How to register for eFiling, step by step
- Go to the SARS eFiling website and choose Register.
- Enter your ID number and personal details so SARS can match you to your tax record.
- Create a username and password.
- Verify your identity with the one-time PIN sent to your phone or email.
- SARS links your tax profile. If anything does not match, you may be asked to upload supporting documents.
Once registered, you log in any time to file returns, see assessments, and download a tax clearance or statement of account.
